A method of calculating radiation damping by means of energy balance is applied to a model harmonic oscillator. A balance equation is derived from the conservation law for energy that is a consequence of the system's equations of motion, and is integrated over a four-dimensional space-time region. The region is bounded in the wave zone by two future-directed null cones and in the near zone by two t = const surfaces. The sources of the radiation are in slow motion and the fields are calculated by means of matched asymptotic expansions. It is found that even though damping is expressed in a third order approximation of the expansion parameter epsilon, the fields need only be determined to one order to calculate the effects of damping.
