We propose to search for substellar-mass companions around our nearest neighbors in the mid-infrared wavelength regime. At 10 (micron) the flux contrast between the star and it's substellar-mass companion is such that it is possible to detect companions with temperatures below 1000 K, which are otherwise missed in optical or near infrared (NIR) surveys, due to saturation and blending effects. Our sample consists of optical and NIR bright, nearby stars, and we expect the search to be particular sensitive between 1 arcsec and 3 arcsec from the primary, which translates to typical separations of about 4 AU. Our prime target is (epsilon) Eri at a distance of 3.2 pc, for which a planet has been detected with a semi-major axis of about 3 AU, corresponding to 1 arcsec (Hatzes et al. 2000). Our sample also includes (epsilon) Ind A and (beta) Hyi, which have reported radial velocity trends (Endl et al. 2002). These are most likely caused by giant planet or substellar companions located at separations > 1 arcsec, making (epsilon) Ind A and (beta) Hyi also very good targets in our companion search program. Here we propose a pilot study to observe just these three most promising targets. Once demonstrated that the proposed method works, we plan to expand our search to the complete target list.
