You have a great idea for a product...the next thoughts are ``Is it a quality product?" and ``Will it work?" Formative evaluation assesses a product while it is still in the process of being created. This allows developers to identify and resolve potential problems before the product is completed and distributed for general use. The Origins Education Forum has developed a formative evaluation model to ensure that products submitted for review have met design and information standards that address the needs of specific target audiences. Products are assessed according to a number of criteria, including scientific and educational content, design, pedagogical approach, and usability. An evaluation team, consisting of professional evaluators, experienced educators, and astronomers, combine their expertise to review products based on this model. The formative evaluation model has been used to review products ranging from brochures, to posters, to activities, to full curricula.
