Using the (3 + 1)-formalism of the Einstein equations, we give a method
of determining apparent horizons in general space-times. We have
determined them numerically for four examples. The method will enable us
to know whether or not a black hole is formed for numerically generated
space-times in three-dimensional numerical relativity.
