We propose to search in nearby southern star-forming regions for free-floating objects of 1-3 M_jup. We will obtain deep wide-field imaging using a pair of moderate-bandwidth filters tuned to the 1.6 micron meth break in the spectra of ultracool objects; these are custom cryogenic filters designed by the PI expressly for this program. Previous studies of young clusters with broadband filters suggests that the IMF continues down to 5-10 M_jup. However, deeper broadband studies are hindered by reddening, circumstellar disk emission, and contamination by background stars. The ``methane-break'' technique is largely immune to all these difficulties. This technique is essentially unexploited - only with the advent of large- format near-IR detectors is this experiment possible. ISPI is optimal for this program given its unsurpassed survey power and ability to accomodate custom filters. This work is a new and timely scientific opportunity to probe the IMF to unprecedentedly low masses.
