Persistent or even continual localized eruptions of gas on Io could be produced through vaporization of surface material heated by infalling particles from the Jovian radiation belts. This process calls for a concentrated local particle influx, which could arise if Io has an intrinsic magnetic field of 0.02-1 gauss at the surface or if corresponding anomalies in its electrical conductivity are present. Seven of the nine eruption centers discovered on Io lie along a contour which is almost a great circle; probably it represents either a global fracture associated with magnetic anomalies or a feature analogous to the auroral oval on the earth.
