We show that when supersymmetric gauge theories are embedded in N=1 supergravity with an M-term they can exhibit breaking of global supersymmetry when graviton and gravitino interactions are turned off and the cosmological constant cancelled. The symmetry breaking is manifested by explicit operators of dimension 2 or less which do not spoil the renormalizability of the theory. The problem of the cosmological constant is no more severe than in ordinary electroweak and grand unified theories.
