Rocket observations of the extinction of solar hydrogen Lyman-alpha radiation have been used to derive pressure, density, and temperature in the mesosphere. Comparisons of the derived atmospheric parameters with the standard atmosphere, with stratospheric data, and with collision-frequency measurements lead to the conclusion that the laboratory measurements of the absorption cross section of Lyman-alpha in molecular oxygen do not apply to conditions in the upper atmosphere.-
