An ozonesonde released from Thessaloniki, Greece (40°N, 23°E) in March 1995 indicated a pronounced stratospheric intrusion into the troposphere. This study represents the first identification and analysis of such an event in southeastern Europe. Total ozone data and potential vorticity values of >6pvu on the 315 K isentrope over Greece supported a low-level southwards excursion of stratospheric air. The event was associated with the evolution of a cut-off low over the Balkans. Confirmation is achieved through potential vorticity and specific humidity fields, as well as METEOSAT-5 images.
