An attractor of dimension less than one derived from a simple cubic recursion is proposed for modelling the large-scale time behaviour of the geomagnetic field. The distribution function of the lengths T of the time intervals between successive reversals has two characteristics properties: (1) it is zero for T smaller than a certain threshold Tmin, corresponding to the observational fact that no such intervals shorter than 40 000 years have been found. (2) The distribution function follows an exponential law for large time intervals, which is also found for the reversals of the Earth's magnetic field.
In conclusion some suggestions concerning characteristics of the geodynamo are derived.
