The Sillen and Kattenberg (1980) low-beta coronal loop model is extended to include a surrounding, current-free plasma, and its kink mode dispersion curves are calculated by solving the linearized MHD equations of motion. A strong stabilizing influence on kink stability growth rates due to the surrounding plasma is found, and it is noted that, in loops that are thick and have small current densities, along with those that have a high density and low magnetic field strength, kink growth times are of the order of several days.
