The isothermal Eulerian Birch-Murnaghan equation of state is currently used in geophysics, despite its recognized shortcomings for very large compressive strains. We propose an equation of state constructed from the Hencky logarithmic strain, rather than from the Eulerian strain. The logarithmic equation of state has a simple expression and is valid in a greater range of pressures than the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state.
