An increase in the period of optical auroral pulsations with increasing latitude in individual displays of pulsating patches has been found from two auroral observing stations (Poker Flat Range, Alaska, at approximately 63 N geomagnetic latitude and Andoya Rocket Range, Norway, at approximately 67 N geomagnetic latitude), using an All-Sky isocon TV camera and a video-integrator, a device capable of sampling small areas of the All-Sky video record. Measurements were made on approximately 100 individual pulsating patches during a selected ten minutes of recording time from each site. The patch periodicities and their observed variation with latitude are comparable with the bounce periods and their variation with latitude for electrons with energies of a few keV in the earth's magnetic field. The significance of these observations is discussed.
