A kinetic model of the electric field potential distribution along the magnetospheric magnetic field line is proposed. This model takes into account the energy and pitch-angle distributions of charged particles as well as the absence of particles in the loss cone. A comparison is made between an analytical solution obtained for a vanishingly small loss cone and numerical solutions for a finite loss cone. The agreement between these two approximations appears to be good for loss cone particle distributions and poor for bi-Maxwellian distributions.
