The Columbus Programme described is a part of the ESA International Space Station Freedom for Earth observation from a Polar Platform. The Columbus Programme involves the following elements: (1) the Columbus Attached Laboratory, a pressurized module which will be permanently connected to Space Station Freedom; (2) the Columbus Free-Flying Laboratory, which will orbit higher than the Space Station Freedom in order to benefit from better microgravity conditions, operates automatically for periods of six months or more at a time, and will be serviced by the Hermes spaceplane; and (3) the Columbus Polar Platform, which will operate automatically and mainly carry Earth observation instruments.
