The conjugate effects in the generation and propagation of large scale traveling ionospheric disturbances, as deduced from the virtual height (h prime F) rises obtained from ionosonde chains in the Japanese and Australian longitudinal sectors have been studied. The data were collected on October 31, 1972 during an auroral substorm onset at which time the Japanese and Australian ionosonde stations were under different solar illumination conditions. A detailed analysis of the auroral and ionospheric data associated with this event for stations positioned together throughout the world is presented, including the riometer absorption records of the onset of an intense global substorm, the geographical locations of ionosonde, magnetometer, and riometer stations used in the study of the source location and propagation of LSTIDs, variations in virtual height, and global effects of LSTIDs on the relative F-region height rises following the onset of an intense auroral substorm.
