The Stasiewicz (1989) gyroviscous model of the magnetopause current layer is applied to the entire magnetopause, using a quantitative magnetospheric field model to provide for the inner boundary condition; the outer boundary condition is given by the IMF draped against the magnetopause surface. The result is a global model of gyroviscous field line merging at the magnetopause, presenting a unified view of such disparate concepts as steady state reconnection, antiparallel merging, viscous interactions, patchy reconnection, flux transfer events, and impulsive penetration.
