The Pc 5 micropulsations are interpreted as the combination of magnetic perturbations associated with the oscillations of two three-dimensional current loops. Loop I is a double sheet system with current flowing into the ionosphere in the poleward portion of the electrojet, equatorward in the ionosphere, and out of the ionosphere in the equatorward portion of the electrojet. Loop II involves downward current flow near noon, westward in the ionosphere as Hall current, and outward at the dawn meridian. Loop I is adequately driven by kinetic energy extracted from the drift energy of the plasma during braking. It is suggested that the Pc 5 oscillations represent LC-oscillations excited by sudden changes in electric field associated with changes in the level of convection in the magnetosphere. When displacement currents and earth induction effects are taken into account, the polarization parameters of the Pc 5 oscillations can be explained by spatial oscillations of electrojet position and concurrent oscillations in current strength.
