Investigating the microscopic background for the derivation of the Vashchenko-Zubarev relation for the Grüneisen parameter γ, we find a generalized formula that takes into account non-central forces and temperature. A numerical estimation shows that the influence of temperature may be neglected for the conditions in the Earth's core and is small even in the Jovian interior. If temperature goes to infinity γ takes the value 2/3 which is that of an ideal gas. Corrections due to non-central forces are much more important and may account for the low values of γ for tetrahedrally bonded covalent materials in the Earth's mantle.
