A generalized invariance principle is derived for a plane-parallel atmosphere. A method for determining the radiation field in a multilayer atmosphere is developed on the basis of this principle. This method, the first part of which is the adding method, can be used for both optically finite and semiinfinite atmospheres. Numerical results are presented for the standard and Milne problems and for the internal-sources problem.
