The intensity ratio of the components of the Mg XII doublet was measured during an M2 solar flare on March 3, 1986 using the Flat Crystal Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission spacecraft. The results confirm the findings of Sylwester et al. (1986), and show that there is a tendency for the intensity ratio between the components of the Mg XII doublet at 8.42 A to exceed the theoretically predicted value of 0.5. The data are explained in terms of the effect of the trapping of resonance radiation.
