Observationally derived values for the braking index of three pulsars are used to infer the effective radius at which the angular momentum loss is taking place. The results indicate that this radius is well within the light cylinder, and that the wind and magnetospheric structures may be quite different from those given in the standard model. A new picture which could take the place of the current views is proposed.
