Scientific paper

A fast, wide angle telescope which will be operated from a Spacelab pallet on the space shuttle and will be capable of imaging to the darker night sky limit and in the ultraviolet wavelength range available from above the Earth's atmosphere is described. The scientific functions and possible missions for the telescope, such as studied of the UV morphology of galaxies, the detection of galactic and extragalactic hidden hot sources, and mapping the dust component of the Milky Way and external galaxies, are analyzed. The design of the telescope is discussed and its integration into the Spacelab systems is examined.
