We present a model of the local magnetic field variability in the Antarctic region based on local magnetometers. At time scales of minutes to days the magnetic field is determined by currents in the magnetosphere and polar ionosphere and responds to changes in the interplanetary medium. Measurements of the field are provided through fluxgate magnetometers at thirteen locations, several of them operating autonomously. The two inputs to the model are the solar wind geoeffective electric field VBSouth, representing the interplanetary "state", and the Southern Polar Cap geomagnetic index, representing the global magnetospheric state. The output is time series of the magnetic field response as a function of local time and latitude. A similar methodology has been developed for the Northern polar cap magnetic field dynamics from regional magnetometers. We compare the responses in the two polar caps for the great storms of October- November 2003.
