The disturbance observed in February, 1990 in the Jovian atmospheric jet at 24 deg N involved the outbreak of two bright features of 6000-km initial length scale on the peak of the eastward jet. A pattern of alternating dark and light spots developed in subsequent days to the west of these bright features. The zonal expansion of the disturbance led to an encirclement of the latitudinal band at 24 deg N 3 months after its outburst; this generated a new temperate belt. The two bright spots are suggested to be due to localized convective instability, and the black spots may proceed from a wave disturbance generated at the onset of convection.
