A major puzzle in AGN physics is whether the Fanaroff-Riley dichotomy observed in large-scale structures of radio galaxies is a result of the impact of the hot-gas environment on the jet propagating through it, or instead due to intrinsic differences in the nuclei of these sources. Our X-ray studies of radio-galaxy nuclei have suggested that there may indeed be a nuclear Fanaroff-Riley dichotomy, but the crucial observations needed to confirm this have yet to be made. We propose a series of short (10-15 ks) EPIC observations of the nuclei of 5 sources that span the Fanaroff-Riley divide in 178-MHz power. We will search for, and constrain the luminosity of, absorbed components in the spectra of these sources, directly testing for a nuclear Fanaroff-Riley dichotomy.
