Observations are described of diffuse material in and around the chromospheric network which lowers the intensity there in the core of H-alpha and is detected best at H-alpha plus or minus 0.5 A. This material seems to be responsible for the H-alpha central reversal in spicules, has typically 30 billion electrons per cu cm and electron temperature not greater than about 30,000 K, and is probably related to the network seen in rocket spectroheliograms. It is confined mainly within a height of 3,500 km and has a typical lateral extent of about 15,000 km.
