In the study of low l p-modes of the Sun in integrated sunlight with ground based spectrometers it was found that even small (0.001) gradients in transparency across the solar disk give rise to displacements of centroids of spectral lines at the m/s level. A prototype instrument which measures this atmospheric gradient continuously, and thereby makes it possible to subtract these artefacts from the measurements, is described.
