The Polar Ionospheric X-ray imaging Experiment (PIXIE) is giving detailed images of the energetic electron precipitation when the POLAR satellite is near perigee over the Antarctica. In this area the PIXIE images have a spatial resolution of the order of 100 km, and a temporal resolution of 10-20 s can be obtained. In this paper we present the first results of a study focusing on the onset and expansion of a substorm occurring on July 24, 1998. The initial onset occurred in a sector of less than one hour magnetic local time (MLT) width near midnight. The region of energetic electron precipitation expanded rapidly westward reaching 21 hours MLT within a few minutes. This corresponds to a speeed of about 10 km/s. An expansion towards the morning side associated with the azimuthal drift of the energetic electrons in the magnetosphere was also observed. The result of field line mapping of the energetic electron precipitation region to the equatorial source region will be given. Ground based observations of the substorm in the Antarctica as well as measurements from geostationary satellites will be presented and discussed in relation to the PIXIE measurements.
