Standard galaxy formation models predict isolated disk galaxies to be embedded in extended, hot gaseous halos, mainly consisting of in-flowing, externally accreted gas. In a recent Chandra observation of the quiescent spiral NGC5746 we have for the first time (tentatively) detected soft X-ray emission from such a halo - a long sought "missing link" in our understanding of galaxy formation. We propose a deep follow-up XMM observation to decisively characterize the nature and properties of this halo. This will impose strong constraints on spiral galaxy formation scenarios, in particular the build-up history of galactic disks.
