1525 Paleomagnetism Applied To Tectonics: Regional, Global
Scientific paper
Although a considerable number of Neopaleozoic poles for South America are already available there is no clear definition of the apparent polar wander path (APWP) for this period. The problem relies on the lack of precise age determinations, and difficulties in constraining properly the primary magnetizations. Most of the existing poles come from tectonized areas, and restoration of magnetization vectors to the pre-folding position sometimes leads to spurious results. New paleomagnetic poles from stable South America (and counterparts in Africa) permitted a critical review of the Neopaleozoic APWP. The proposed path supports the Pangea A configuration; deduced plate velocities and rotation angles are similar to those postulated for Laurentia from Permo-Carboniferous to Permo-Triassic.
