We propose to obtain XMM-Newton data for a complete sample of the 20 brightest Type 2 AGN drawn from ~100000 low-z AGN in the SDSS DR4. The sample members have a flux in the [OIII]5007 emission line of at least 4E-14 ergs/cm2/s. This sample has approved Spitzer spectroscopic observations and each galaxy has a wealth of information about the AGN and its host galaxy derived homogeneously from the SDSS (including the black hole mass, [OIII] luminosity, and Eddington ratio for the AGN and the mass, structure, and stellar content of the galaxy). We will use these combined data to determine the fraction of Compton-thick AGN and to determine whether they differ systematically in terms of the properties of the AGN and the host galaxy, providing new insights into AGN physics.
