Estimates of the total gravitational mass in the clusters Abell 1689 and Abell 2218 are derived from the density and temperature distributions of the x-ray emitting intracluster gas under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. The x-ray values are found to be significantly less than recent estimates derived from weak gravitational lensing of background sources. Possible explanations for this discrepancy are discussed.
