The scattering of a third body off a hard binary may be approximated as an angular momentum-dependent breakup of a three-body system. Empirical distribution funtions, obtained from experiments on initially bound three-body systems, were used to derive scattering cross-sections for the energy exchange between a hard binary and a third body. The results for all kinds of events and those restricted to interactions in which the identity of one of the binary components is changed are considered separately. A comparison is made with numerically obtained cross-sections reported by other authors. Good agreement was noted for very hard binaries and energy changes larger than about 20 percent, while for weaker interaction the comparison is less satisfactory.
