A statistical comparison is made of the mean spectra of positive and negative polarity [`]slow tail' atmospheric waveforms. The spectral estimates at discrete frequencies of 25 waveforms of each polarity are shown to be normally distributed, and it is concluded that the mean spectra of the two populations are equal to better than the 5 per cent level of significance.
