The presence of magnetic holes in the solar wind has been revealed by a variety of spacecraft in various regions of the heliosphere. However, their origin is still unclear. There are currently two distinct possibilities that are discussed. The first suggests that they are generated in the vicinity of observation point. The second, suggested by a number of authors, favors a remote generation mechanism in which the holes are created in the vicinity of the sun and can survive in the solar wind which carries them out into the heliosphere over enormous distances. A statistical study of the occurrence of magnetic holes observed during the same phase of the solar cycle in different regions of the solar system should help to clarify this question. This paper presents the development of a comprehensive, automatic wavelet based methodology for the recognition of magnetic holes. This algorithm has been applied to simultaneous periods of VEX and Cluster data. A comparison of the occurrence rates of magnetic holes in these regions is discussed and also compared to previous results in other regions of the heliosphere.
