Conditions under which the electron content can be determined within a plasma column along a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave propagating parallel to the magnetic field are discussed. The measurement of the polarization angle allows this determination, provided the magnetic field is known. Pioneer 6 experiments relating to the solar corona show that knowledge of the sector polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field (IPM) is a necessary condition. A correlation was discovered between the polarity of the IPM near the earth and geomagnetic variations observed within the polar cap. As geomagnetic variations at polar stations are continuously recorded, in situ measurements of the IPM onboard of Helios should resolve the problem of uniqueness of the Faraday rotation experiment.
