The suggestion that man-made VLF waves may have a significant effect on the overall structure of trapped energetic electrons within the plasmasphere, including the slot region, is challenged. Relevant observations are examined, and the possibility that man-made radiation could cause local perturbations at a specific point in space and time is conceded. It is argued that the agreement between calculated and previously observed equatorial pitch angle distribution shows that resonant interactions with plasmaspheric hiss give correct pitch angle diffusion coefficients, and that the agreement between the calculated and observed equilibrium radial profiles shows that plasmaspheric hiss can account for the electron loss rates as a function of energy and L. A wave distribution significantly different from plasmaspheric hiss would undergo resonances with the trapped electrons and cause measurably different diffusion rates.
