It is hoped that the rendezvous of five spacecraft near Comet Halley in March 1986 will yield data which will prove sufficient for characterizing the cometary nucleus. Calculations based on the brightness before solar heating commenced and the subsequent solar energy absorbed caused a tail and coma to form indicated that the nucleus has a 26 percent albedo and a 5 km diameter. Data from the Giotto spacecraft, which will pass within 500 km of the nucleus, should allow the size determination to be confirmed, aid in defining the shape and reveal whether or not rotation is occurring.
