In March, 1986, the Japanese space probes Sakigake and Susei made measurements in the shock front region ahead of the Comet Halley nucleus; the Soviet probes Vega-1 and Vega-2 then penetrated to within 9000 km of the nucleus, and the European spacecraft Giotto was able to approach to within 600 km. An account is presently given of the results of the past two years' studies of the data thus obtained for the chemical and physical processes occurring in the comet during its inner solar system region journey, with emphasis on the Giotto results. Giotto was able to obtain a photograph of the Comet Halley nucleus.
