A case study on the evolution of equatorial spread F (ESF) irregularities was performed with a nonlinear numerical simulation model. The observational results obtained from a set of coordinated measurements on the night of 24 July 1979, available in the literature, were compiled by us and used in the present investigation. The investigation reveals that the observations could not be explained by means of gravity alone. Significant nonlinear contributions of neutral winds and electric fields measured under a nearly realistic situation are found to be essential, in addition to gravity, for the development of ESF on that night.
