The EISCAT Tromsoe radar observed a burst of ionospheric O+ upflow above 500 km during the May 15, 1997 storm, in a region of convection reversal and strong field-aligned current. POLAR satellite observed enhancements of the O+ number density in the same local time sector. Magnetic field mapping using the T96 magnetic field model shows POLAR and EISCAT Tromsoe radar are probably on the same magnetic field line. This may be a case of bursty ionospehric outflows. We examine possible generation mechanisms for the observed ionospheric O+ upflow with the help of the Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics procedure and the NCAR Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model.
