The results of HILAT satellite instrumentation and ground-based radar probes of irregularities surrounding a dayside cleft feature are reported. HILAT carries various ion and electron monitoring instruments and an auroral ionospheric mapper. The broadband HF radar (8-20 MHz) at Goose Bay has a steerable phased array for narrow beam signals and can be operated in a multipulse mode for autocorrelation studies. On Nov. 28, 1983 the satellite detected a cleft region of current sheets embedded in a region of precipitating electrons. HF radar scans of the area east of the cleft revealed an extended magnetic east-west aligned region of small-scale irregularities, i.e., scintillations and backscatter, at the same latitude as the cleft. Convergence of convective flows from the dawn and dusk sectors was indicated, with the flows ultimately moving poleward. The observed irregularities may have been caused by gradient drift and current convective plasma instabilities. The causes for the instabilities and potential mechanisms for their disappearance at the poles are discussed.
