We report preliminary results from a campaign study of ionospheric scintillations using ionospheric radio occultation measurements by Formosat-3/COSMIC satellites and ground scintillation measurements by the Scintillation Network Decision Aid (SCINDA) network. Under the SCINDA project, scientists at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have developed a sensor network for the purpose of monitoring low-latitude ionospheric total electron content (TEC) and scintillations associated with equatorial Spread F. The network currently consists of sixteen stations distributed around the globe and the data have been used to conduct numerous studies on the characteristics and climatology of equatorial scintillation. The present campaign study focused on equatorial scintillation events detected simultaneously by Formosat-3/COSMIC satellite GPS receivers and ground VHF radio receivers during June 28- 30, 2006. Locations of ionospheric scintillations are estimated by triangulation from Formosat-3 satellite and SCINDA ground station. Electron density profiles deduced from ionospheric radio occultation are also used to examine the relationship between the scintillation altitude and the F layer peak. The preliminary results are discussed to better specify the occurrence of equatorial scintillations.
