Particle Bursts
Scientific paper
The intensifications of the fluxes of energized chard particles (protons, 125 keV >= Ep and electrons, 30 keV >= Ee ) have been observed in the magnetotail and magnetosheath as well as shock. These intensifications are called magnetospheric energetic particle bursts. These burst events are closely associated with the particle acceleration in the magnetosphere, which is one of most important problems in space physics. In this paper, we have applied a time-dependent magnetotail model based on the long-term observation of the magnetitic fields BHP with time variation derived from instantaneous measurements and have used this model to study the trajectories of energetic protons. We also represented the observations of energetic protons in a newly defined STI (sector-time-intensity) coordinate system in order to study the coherent characteristics of observed energetic protons during short periods. The combination of the STI surface analysis and the trajectory simulation in our time -dependent magnetotail model shows that energetic protons observed during burst events are most likely contributed by multiple localized source regions, which may occur simultaneously and exist only 5-10 minutes, and the observed strong fluctuation of the magnetic fields are frequently originated locally.
