The first balloon flight of a crystal diffraction lens telescope, CLAIRE, took place on June 15, 2000 from Gap, France. The target for the telescope was the Crab Nebula. This is the first time that a Laue (transmission) type crystal diffraction lens has been used to look an astrophysics source. It is the first of three balloon flights planned to test this concept for future astrophysics experiments and the possibility of a satellite experiment. .
