The development of a new generation of telescopes adapted to operation in a network which allows images obtained by each instrument to be combined is discussed. A scheme is described in which an array of 1.5 m diameter telescopes with classical optics, housed in reinforced concrete spheres, transmits thin light pencils towards a central laboratory. The reconstructed image comprises interference patterns characterizing the morphology of the star under observation. The advantages and limitations of such a system are considered, together with technological obstacles to its development. A Michaelson type interferometer utilizing two independent telescopes is described. The role of astronomical satellites is considered.
