An infrared telescope has been designed to be mounted open port on board different types of aircraft without modifying their frames. The 32.5 cm Cassegrain telescope with a wobbling secondary mirror is adapted to an emergency door equipped with an aerodynamic spoiler. The instrument package is supported by a 2 axis gimbal centered on the chamber in which the telescope is placed. The latter is placed in the external environment while the experiment itself is accessible. The telescope is pointed with two torque motors. The pointing system is made of an inertial system associated with a star tracker. The whole system with a 15 kg payload allows tracking at 30 + or - 4 deg elevation within 15 arc rms for durations exceeding 40 min steady flight. The total duration of observations (2 to 4 hr) and the altitude (10 to 12 km) depend on the type of aircraft used. In flight, data are recorded, processed in real time and displayed by an airborne computer.
