Ionospheric and auroral observations, conducted from the AFGL airborne ionospheric observatory for nine hours of constant local midnight on December 9, 1971, were complemented by observations from the DMSP and Isis 2 satellites. This paper examines the results of this study in reference to the relationships of auroral activity, bottomside ionospheric parameters, precipitating electron fluxes and ionospheric currents. Particular emphasis is placed on the distinction between two types of active auroral displays which occurred during the flight: (1) the auroral substorm with its associated magnetic disturbances and (2) a type of auroral activity associated with perturbations of the magnetosphere as observed through oscillatory motion of the earth's bow shock.
