The three-cluster generator-coordinate method is used to investigate the 7Li(p,p)7Li, 7Li(p,p')7Li*, 7Li(p,γ)8Be, 7Li(p,α)α and 7Be(n,p)7Li reactions at low energies. The antisymmetric wave functions are defined by a mixing of α + t + p, α + 3He + n and α + α configurations, with an exact treatment of good quantum numbers and of scattering boundary conditions. We obtain a fair agreement with experiment for the 8Be spectrum up to about 20 MeV excitation energy, and for electromagnetic transition probabilities. The theory is shown to account for the giant dipole resonance in 8Be. The properties of the 2- resonance (Ex = 18.91 MeV) and its importance in the 7Be(n,p)7Li cross section are analyzed in the microscopic framework. For the 7Li(p,α)α reaction, important in stellar evolution, we discuss the low-energy cross section, and point out the influence of two subthreshold states.
